WES (World Education Services) is a third-party credential evaluator widely used in North America. When international students apply to U.S. schools, some universities and programmes require a WES evaluation. The same evaluation system is also used for **Canadian immigration (ECA)**. WES converts your grades and degrees to North American standards, for example a 4.0-scale GPA and the equivalent degree level. ## Canada ECA vs U.S. evaluation - **Canada (ECA):** used for immigration. The report states which Canadian degree level your credential equals and can be verified by IRCC. - **U.S. evaluation:** used for study or employment. The usual types are *Course-by-Course* (every course converted, GPA calculated) and *Document-by-Document* (degree level only). The **degree certificate** with a copy of its English translation, plus the **online degree verification report** downloaded from the degree centre. 3. The **graduation certificate** with a copy of its English translation, plus the **online registration record** obtained from CHSI. The CHSI and degree-centre verifications are the source of “Documents verified by CSSD” on the WES report. ## How long does it take? CHSI verification takes about 18 working days (varies in holidays; sometimes a week), EMS to WES about 3–5 working days, and WES evaluation about 7 working days. **A typical total is about six weeks, and about four weeks when all goes smoothly.** Cases that need school verification, such as vocational credentials or closed schools, take longer. **Note:** these timings come from our years of cases. WES cannot judge by itself whether a Chinese transcript or degree is genuine, so it works with Chinese verification bodies. CHSI/CSSD and the degree centre verify first; that is why a WES report shows “Documents verified by CSSD”. A Chinese degree therefore usually needs CHSI verification, a degree verification report, and materials sent on to WES. How long does the whole evaluation take? From our experience: CHSI verification about 18 working days (varies in holidays; sometimes a week), EMS to WES about 3–5 working days, WES evaluation about 7 working days. **A typical total is about six weeks, and about four weeks when everything goes smoothly.** Cases that need school verification, such as vocational or closed schools, take longer. These figures are historical experience, not a promise. Will a WES evaluation raise my GPA? Not necessarily. WES weights major courses more heavily and non-core courses (PE, political theory and similar) less. Students with strong major grades and weak general-course grades may rise noticeably; others may fall. We have seen 2.4 rise to 2.8, and 3.6 fall to 3.0.
